Applications of DC Hybrid Generators
For a remote telecom site powered by diesel variable speed generators, the DC Generator hybrid solution can provide significant fuel and other operational savings.
A Hybrid DC generator set up dramatically reduces fuel consumption and costs and total cost of ownership, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It reduces maintenance requirements and offers a more reliable power solution as compared to dc diesel generators.
Hybrid DC Generators find application in the following areas:
- Remote Telecom Towers
- Mining
- Military Forces
- Disaster Relief
- Remote/Distribute Power
Hybrid DC Generator Operations
A Hybrid DC Generator must use the control system to define the order of priority of for it’s energy sources. Typically, a an auxiliary hybrid generator incorporates solar or wind at a telecom site. The solar/wind charges a battery bank and the DC generator only turns on when there is an active demand that is not being met by the solar/wind power. Even when the batteries are not at an optimally charged level, a well programmed controller should not start the DC generator unless there is an active load requirement. This allows the solar/wind to continue its slower trickle charge.
The below is a simple line diagram of a DC generator hybrid system Innotec put together for a Telecom BTS site.
The fuel savings of a Hybrid DC Generator depends on the amount of solar/wind power available at the site and the size of the battery storage capacity. A typical installation that Innotec Power uses has a solar panel set up to 5 kW or a wind turbine up to 2 kW. The battery storage will depend on site specific requirements.
Innotec Power specializes in producing DC Generator heads. The company customizes the voltage output with the running rpm of the engine to optimize efficiency and lower OPEX. With Hybrid DC Generators, the key is right sizing the generator, battery, solar panel with the site conditions. With the lower cost of solar, maximizing the solar input where possible is a key to a successful deployment.
